3. Wait somewhere lit and warm — a neighbor's, your car, a 24-hour store. Not on a dark step.
4. The locksmith confirms the address is yours. Expect to show ID, or something that ties you to the house. That check is what protects your home every other night of the year.
5. The door is opened, the lock is tested, and you are inside. If the lock itself failed, it can be swapped on the spot — the van carries cylinders and deadbolts.

While you wait — and what not to try
