Locksmith in Takoma Park, MD

Takoma Park is a service area of our Rockville shop at 313 Congressional Lane, at the far south-east corner of the towns we cover. It has the oldest housing stock of any of them, and old houses ask different questions of a locksmith than new ones do.

Takoma Park, street by street

Takoma Park is a Victorian streetcar suburb that never got knocked down. The streets around Old Town — Carroll Avenue, and the residential blocks off Philadelphia Avenue, Maple Avenue and Flower Avenue — are lined with Victorians, foursquares and bungalows from the 1880s through the 1920s, many still wearing their original mortise locks and glass-knobbed hardware. That stock defines the work here. A century-old door has settled, its mortise pocket is cut for hardware nobody stocks at a big-box store, and the wrong "upgrade" can ruin both the door and the look of the house. The right first move is almost always repair: freeing a seized mortise case, fitting a correctly sized cylinder, adjusting a strike rather than carving a new one.

The other half of Takoma Park is rental. Garden apartment buildings line Maple Avenue, Flower Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue, and a town of renters is a town of unit lockouts, lock changes between tenants, and mailbox locks. Washington Adventist University keeps a student population in the mix on Flower Avenue.

Old Town Carroll Avenue carries the small independent shops — and the city line with Washington, DC runs right along the neighbourhood's edge, with the Takoma Metro station sitting just over it on the DC side.

Where the calls come from

Residential calls split between the two Takoma Parks: careful repair work on original hardware in the historic streets, and volume rental work — lockouts, tenant changes, mailbox locks — in the apartment corridors along Maple, Flower and New Hampshire Avenues. Commercial work comes from the Old Town shopfronts on Carroll Avenue, small premises with older doors that need the same repair-first thinking as the houses. Vehicle work follows street parking rather than garages here: keys locked in cars on residential blocks, and the lots around the shops and the university.

Questions

Locksmith questions, Takoma Park

Are you based in Takoma Park?
No — the shop is in Rockville at 313 Congressional Lane, and Takoma Park is a service area covered from it. One real shop beats a fake local address.
Can you fix the original mortise lock in a century-old Takoma Park house without wrecking the door?
That is the aim every time. Old mortise hardware can usually be repaired or matched, and non-destructive work comes first. If the lock genuinely cannot be saved, we will show you why and agree on the replacement — and the price — before touching the door.
I'm a landlord in Takoma Park. Can you change locks between tenants?
Yes — it is routine work in the apartment corridors here. We will need your authority as the owner or manager, so have that ready, along with how many doors and mailboxes are involved.
I'm just over the DC line near Takoma Metro. Do you cover that?
Takoma Park, Maryland is the listed service area. If your address is on the District side, call with the address anyway and ask — the answer depends on the job, and we would rather tell you honestly than guess.

Call and describe what is locked — that is the whole first step. If it can wait until working hours, book a visit instead and pick a time.
